i've looked over the materials for CHC kindergarten. I noticed that my son knows a bunch already, but then there is also material we haven't covered, yet. specifically, religion lessons and math lessons (counting money, adding/subtracting, etc.)
i was thinking about starting him now instead of waiting until the fall. i did some reading on the CHC website and changed my mind.
instead, we are working on our phonics, reading neat books from the library, and doing letter and number writing practice. there are so many NEAT activities, that we actually do school around the clock. we don't just sit and do work at the table on worksheets.
i'm just enjoying this so much. i know there will be hard days, but i'm excited for my children and that i can share this with them.
yesterday, we practiced our phonics, did some drawing and used our scissors for the first time. they were in a cutting frenzy! they didn't want to stop!
some of the upcoming activities i'd like to do with them are:
-finding materials to make our own bird nests (science and art)
-view pictures of birds in books and online, try to go out and find them
-measuring pieces of straw, and taping them to a piece of paper (math skills/writing skills)
-logging the temperature outside each day, create a graph from it, observe the weather daily (science and math)
-plant a bulb in some gravel and watch the roots grow. measure the plant and chart the growth (science and math)
-go on some nature walks at the beach
-go fishing with homemade rod (color recognition)
-do our preschool songs and fingerplays
-nursery rhymes
-tying shoes
-cooking class (every saturday morning we've been baking things together - math/science)
-painting, mixing colors
-board games and puzzles
-sequencing
those are just off the top of my head. i'm also trying to gather some fun kitchen utensils from the dollar store for our next beach visit. i picked up a few plastic colanders from the St. Vincent store for 25 cents. that will be fun for digging and straining sand/rocks!

I've decided to go year round here too. Won't start Christian on CHC until the FAll also, so for now I'm filling in with 'Letter of the Week'...since he already know their sounds and so forth...I'm delving a bit deeper and having him practice writing the letters(I'm getting tons of printouts from the Letter of the Week e-mail list)...and we are practicing reading with Bob books...he loves those. Sarah on the other hand doesn't care for them but is loving the CHC readers...go figure...lol. I also want to order the 'Math-U-See' Primer...I had started with Alpha with Sarah and she wasn't quite ready because she couldn't write her numbers very well yet. Hopefully, she'll ve able to review with Christian over the Summer and then we can start Alpha in the Fall. I like it better then what CHC provides because of the DVD and so forth.
Now that I'm getting my act together thanks to flylady, I'm fiding that I can actually spend alot more time with them, stress and worry free. I'm loving it!
