Tolkien's 'Father Christmas' Illustrations
In 1920, J. R. R. Tolkien started a tradition of writing Christmas letters to his children. Over the years, he illustrated the letters with a variety of characters, including Father Christmas. Tolkien also hand-lettered the envelopes, created North Pole postmarks and designed his own stamps.View the Slideshow

I pledge allegience to the flag...
Commentary on the Pledge of Allegiance

As a schoolboy, one of Red Skelton's teachers explained the words and meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance to his class. Skelton later wrote down, and eventually recorded, his recollection of this lecture. It is followed by an observation of his own.
I - - Me; an individual; a committee of one.
Pledge - - Dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self-pity.
Allegiance - - My love and my devotion.
To the Flag - - Our standard; Old Glory ; a symbol of Freedom; wherever she waves there is respect, because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts, Freedom is everybody's job.
United - - That means that we have all come together.
States - - Individual communities that have united into forty-eight great states. Forty-eight individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose. All divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that is love for country.
And to the Republic - - Republic--a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people; and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.
For which it stands
One Nation - - One Nation--meaning, so blessed by God.
Indivisible - - Incapable of being divided.
With Liberty - - Which is Freedom; the right of power to live one's own life, without threats, fear, or some sort of retaliation.
And Justice - - The principle, or qualities, of dealing fairly with others.
For All - - For All--which means, boys and girls, it's as much your country as it is mine.
And now, boys and girls, let me hear you recite the Pledge of Allegiance:
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which it stands; one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our country, and two words have been added to the Pledge of Allegiance: Under God. Wouldn't it be a pity if someone said that is a prayer, and that would be eliminated from schools, too?

God bless coffee
that glorious beverage.
ahhhhhhh.
i'm just miserable without it. my normal routine is 2 cups a day. if for some reason my first cup gets cold (and it does about 80% of the time) then i feel cheated. like i didn't enjoy my cup. so i reach for another.
otherwise, i drink the cup and get busy and have another sometime in late morning or early afternoon. that extra boost to get me through.
in the old days, i would drink iced coffee and mountain dew chasers. i'm glad i kicked that habit.
but oh that cup i so rely on to get out of my fog and face the day. i'm sipping my 2nd cup now. i can already tell it will go half consumed and the kids will need me. when i get back it will be nearly cold.
oh well... THANK YOU, LORD for giving us coffee! i sing it's praises like the Irish praise punch! :)

some neat movie ideas
We were soldiers with Mel Gibson. It's a heavy war movie, and it's based on a true story. There are good references to God in it though that made it good.
The Rockateer - based on a comic book super hero
The Secret of Nimh - a great cartoon that Melanie enjoyed as a kid growing up (animated)
Clash of the Titans - action movie based on Greek and Roman mythology figures (parent's discretion)
My Man Godfrey - hollywood classic starring William Powell (timeless humour)
The Bells of Saint Mary - classic
Watership Down - animated, based on a novel by Richard Adams. Physical and spiritual struggle of survival for a community of rabbits in England.
Lord of the Rings (The Motion Picture) - The Fellowship of the Ring - from J.R.R. Tolkien's masterpiece (lots of Catholic symbolism, character struggles mimic one's own examination of conscience and daily struggle for eternal salvation. Way cool!)

The Patriot starring Mel Gibson. Some bloody battle scenes, and is long to sit through.

The Sixth Day with Arnold Schwarzennegar - based on cloning. This movie hits close to home and makes you ask "what if".
Life is Beautiful - a Catholic classic! Comes with the Pope's accolades. About the Jewish holocaust. Comes in both English and subtitled versions.
Patton - story of General George S. Patton, WWII legendary heroe
Stargate - a good sci-fi movie of scientists exploring other worlds. Action packed.
The Great Escape - WWII POW camp - 3hr movie
The Christmas Carol starring George C. Scott - classic
It's a Wonderful Life - classic dealing with hope and despair

Mysteries of the Rosary - EWTN's fifteen part t.v. series hosted by Fr. Jaques Dailey O.S.B. Detailed look at the history, tradition, and prayer of the Holy Rosary. Daily uses beautiful works of art and the teachings of the saints to explore the meaning and depth of the powerful prayer. excellent for enriching our spiritual growth through this awesome contemplative prayer. This one is great for aiding your children to pray the Rosary into their young adult life. Teaches them that praying the Rosary is most powerful against all their "Goliaths" in life.
The Easter Triiduum - EWTN's 3 part series on the spiritual significance of Holy Week by Father John Corapi - (Warning: listening to Father Corapi just might make you a saint!!!) My husband personally saw him in a seminar and says he is awesome. He has never met any other priest that tells it like it is - the Truth and nothing but the Truth. Father wants nothing more than to keep your children out of hell and to get them into Heaven.
